For my final project I want
to start up my own business in interior decoration, more specifically the
furniture, textiles and accessories used to create the theme in any room.
My plan is to take old unused furniture and
upcycle it with a modern twist of graphic art printed onto the items. The
method used for this would be first to create images/designs in photoshop and
have them printed. Transferring these images to the furniture would all be done
by hand using varnishes and stains to produce the upcycled piece. Similar
methods would be used to transfer to textiles and other accessories e.g lamps,
vases.
I first had the idea for
starting this type of business when I was asked by a family member to re
decorate her old bedroom furniture instead of her disposing of the old set and
buying a new one. The cost of redecorating the furniture was substantially lower
than purchasing a new set, and when finished looked just as good. It got me thinking
about how much old furniture people dispose of and how instead of creating more
waste it was a much simpler solution to use these old pieces to create new
ones. I set about finding out how to get my hands on old furniture and found
that charity shops and car boot sales were great for finding cheap well intact
furniture. I also asked around family and friends and have come across quite a
few with sheds and garages stacked full of old pieces they don’t want to dump
but no longer have any use for.
